How To Merge Config Files

For Original, go to File, and Merge. Select the *.cfg file, and click on Open. It should Merge.

For Patched, go to Merge. Select the *.cfg file, and click on Open. It should Merge.

E.G: For Jakx's Spoofing Pack, extract the *.txt files to your LISTS folder, and extract the *.cfg to the same directory as Proxomitron.exe. Then Merge as described.

Any comments/suggestions about this topic can be posted.

This is getting interesting. I know it's been around a very long time, but I've never tried the Proxomitron Program. I'm downloading and saving the program and the patch for now. Later I'll give it a shot. I'm also reading through some of these great posts you have here on the forum.

Once my medication kicks in I'm sure I'll better understand all this. lol

Proxomitron is as powerful as a web filtering program can get.

The things that might strike you confusing are, how the heck do those filters do what they do?

Well, go to this site and it'll teach you, http://www.sankey.ws/proxomitron.html

It takes a while to get the hang of it, but you'll see that while learning, you're gaining independence, that's what I've found.

Well, my first attempt at this failed miserably. I installed it okay, configured the browser settings okay (the "localhost" and 8080" entries). Then, as with most new things I try, comes the part that would require some real thought on my part.

This part: "And, if you are already connecting through another proxy, you must set The Proxomitron to use the proxy settings that your browser currently uses before you tell your browser to use The Proxomitron."

Oh well. I've decided to buy that T-shirt for my wife after all...the one that reads, "I'm with Stupid".

If someone is willing to walk me through this that would be great.

I'm connected to the Internet with SBC Yahoo Dial! if it helps you help me.

The first question is, do you have a Hosts file? If not, the computer will not understand what "localhost" is. A better idea is to use 127.0.0.1 instead.

If you are using a remote proxy, this is relevant, otherwise you can skip it. People who browse through anonymous proxies will use this, for instance.

Was there any proxy server in the box(es) before you pasted the Proxomitron proxy address in it?

BTW, instead of "localhost", try "127.0.0.1".

And uncheck "Automatic Proxy Detection". That might fix it

Let me try to explain this. I'm going to need something more "step-by-step". I need it explained to me as I don't know what we're talking about...because I don't know what we are talking about.

After installation you must configure your web browser to use the program.

Internet Explorer 5.x: Select "Tools", "Internet Options", then "Connections", then the dial-up connection you use (or LAN if appropriate) click "Settings" then check "Use Proxy Server". Click "Advanced" and under the HTTP entry only, enter "localhost" for host and "8080" for port. Be sure you don't have autoconfig enabled - it will undo these changes! "

Good so far. But right here is were it gets vague for me...

"Both Netscape and Internet Explorer allow you to switch between these two settings with a simple checkbox in their proxy configuration screens. And, if you are already connecting through another proxy, you must set The Proxomitron to use the proxy settings that your browser currently uses before you tell your browser to use The Proxomitron."

I haven't a clue where this setting is made, or even if do I use a proxy. Like I said, I'm using SBC Yahoo Dial.

If I'm not using a proxy, and I only need to do step one, then something else is wrong because I can't connect to the Internet after step one.

Bold,is Proxo running after you have configured the browser settings?You'll get an error message along the lines of :"the connection has been refused to the proxy you have configured."if you try to connect to the Internet through your browser without Proxomitron running.

Just close the browser,then double click on the Proxomitron icon.This will open your browser automatically.You could also configure Proxomitron to open your homepage on start up-

open Proxo's main window> Press the config button.Go to the startup tab.Type in the URL of your favourite page where it says:Run entry below when Proxomitron starts.

Under the HTTP in Proxo,be sure the port is set to 8080.

First off, a hearty to you, Bold_Fortune. You can Google the In-tard-net to death, but I personally gar-own-tee that you won't find a better support site for the Proxomitron than what you've got right here. 'Nuff said.

Uhhhh, does Unix know that (or any other OS)? The localhost isn't a function of the HOSTS file, nor even of the OS. IIRC, it's is a Layer 2 protocol (out of 7 layers), but it could be Layer 3 - I'm too lazy to go look it up right now. (Besides, it's almost lunch, and you all know how I get grouchy if I don't get fed on time. [rolleyes])

Of course, you'll want to remove the hash marks from the beginning and ending tags. If I didn't put them in, the forum software would act on the link as if it were real, instead of showing it as an example. Alternatively, you can cheat, and use the IMG button, just above form textarea where you enter your message. (It's the second button from the left, in the lower row. A pop-up box appears, and you enter the desired URL. Pretty easy, no?)

Hopefully this gets you over the hurdle.

Rather than scrub the kitchen floor for the third time while I wait, I've decided to post the inevitable questions I will have when this fails...even when I'll be following these instructions to the letter.

1.) Are there any Services I absolutely need enabled? (I run on bare minimum Services.)

2.) Are there any specific files or folders I need other than a HOSTS file? (I delete bunches of them from my system?)

3.) Are there certain default settings I need to go back to using in Internet Properties? (I run a really tight configuration.)

4.) What did you have for lunch, anyway? I had oatmeal. (Oh God, tell he didn't, too. Mustard stains would be bad enough, but clumps of oatmeal would be just too much to handle.)
