Brief Update:System is running absolutely perfectly.I hadn't anticipated just how long it was going to take to do a complete job.Spent this evening deleting the final stray .dlls left behind from the removal of both I.E and O.E.

Have not even sifted through the pnf folder as yet.XP "weighs in" at around 600mb so far."Peernet,Provisioning and software distribution" folders are something of an unknown quantity,so I have left well alone.

Question for Bold_Fortune:What's the best "orphan/unused .dll"-finding programme?

????,??,????`????,? _J_G_ ????,??,????`????,?

Here's something kind of fun. This is a list of Temp and Junk-Type Files I've been compiling. I configure my Temp File Cleaner to be sure to remove any of these it finds should they return. I don't have all the definitions added yet.

~*.* / Temporary Files
*.$$$ / MS-DOS Temporary Files
*.&db / Temporary Files (dBASE IV)
*.--- / Setup Temporary Files
*.?$? / Temporary Files(st Reader)
*.?~? / Temporary Files
*.MS / Microsoft Product Backup Files
*.^ / Temporary Files
*.__ / Temporary Files
*._dd / Lost Cluster Files
*._detmp / Temporary Files
*.mp / Temporary Files
*.bak / Backup Files
*.bk? / Potential junk
chklist.* /Lost Cluster Files
*.chk / Lost Cluster Log Files
*.cpy / Backup Files
*.db$ / Temporary Files (dBASE)
*.dmp / Potential junk
*.err / Error File
*.fic / Potential junk
*.fnd / Find Result Files
*.ftg / Word List File of *.HLP
*.fts / Word List File of *.HLP
*.gid / Windows Help Index Files

*.log / Log Files

But I protect these log files:

INSTALL.LOG
uninstal.log
Unistall.log
install.log
NTUSER.DAT.LOG
UsrClass.dat.LOG
PASSWORD.LOG
default.log
SAM.LOG
SECURITY.LOG
software.LOG
system.LOG
PASSWD.LOG
AVVirus.log
AVApp.log
AVError.log

The reason I protect these particular log files is because without the Unistall.log and install.log files I can't uninstall certain programs if I want to.

The system-protected LOG files, and NAV log files can't be deleted this way anyway, but I enter them so HDValet won't spend 5 minutes trying to figure out it can't delete them.

*.nav / Backup Files
*.nu3 / Symantec Backup File
*.old / Backup Files
*.prv / Backup Files (bootlog.prv: Windows diagnostic file)
*.sdi / Archive Content File
*.sik / Potential junk
*.spc / Temporary Files (WordPerfect for Windows)
*.syd / Backup Files
*.temp / Temporary Files
*.tmp / Temporary Files
*.wbk / Word Backup Files
*.~* / Temporary Files
*__ofidx*.* / Microsoft Find Fast Indexer File
*.license.txt / Potential junk
*install*.txt / Potential junk
*.log.txt / Log Files Windows diagnostic files
*modemlog.txt / Windows Modem Log File
*order*.txt / Potential junk

*readme*.txt / Potential junk

I have to protect Perfect Disk's readme files because it won't operate without its "readme.txt" or "register.txt" files.

*whatsnew*.txt / Potential junk
0*.nch / Temporary Files created by MS Outlook Express
ABEND.LOG / Novell Abend Log
anti-vir.dat / Created by F-Prot Anit-Virus
eula.txt / Microsoft end-user license agreement
file_id.diz / Description of Shareware
ghosterr.txt / Norton Ghost Error File
iebak.dat / Internet Explorer Junk File
modemdet.txt / Windows Diagnostic file
mscreate.dir / Microsoft Junk File
msoe.txt / Readme for Microsoft Outlook™ Express
mssecure.xml / Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer File
pq_debug.txt / PowerQuest PartitionInfo file
pspbrwse.jbf / Paint Shop Folder Image Information Cache File
suhdlog.dat / Windows diagnostic file
system.st / Windows diagnostic file
twain???.mtx / TWAIN Temporary file
UNDO*.Reg / Registration Backup (REGCLEAN.EXE)

These I still need to add definitions to...

*.000
*.001
*.002
*.1st (system.1st is a Windows diagnostic file)
*.b~k
*.bk
*.bmk
*.cam
*.cb
*.cln
*.cnt
*.da1
*.da2
*.diz
*.doc
*.edb
*.err
*.fix
*.ign
*.ink
*.lgc
*.lge
*.lic
*.new
*.out
*.par
*.pvt
*.query
*.sav
*.syd
*.umb
*.~mp
*.*_
*.!!!
*.lhx

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional extentions already in HDValet...

Borland Temporary Files:

*.ilc
*.ild
*.ilf
*.ils
*.tds

Setup Temporary Files:

mscreate.dir

Temporary Files:

*.~*
*.^*
*.??$

Visual Studios temp files:

Erm..are you sure?LOL!Had this mad Austrian orphaned dll finder a while back.Eachtime I asked it to scan the O.S and compile a list of unused dlls,it would confront me with a dialogue box saying:"VAS!!DO YOU REALISE THAT VILL TAKE ME TVENTY MINUTES!!?"

Vis-vis your temp-cleaning config,I have much the same set up(not quite as indepth)but the programme refuses to run on RC2.It just hangs halfway through cleaning, which is a shame, because I liked it.

"Unregister Dll" vanishes,too.

BTW.Is it my imagination,or did you re-upload a whole set of bats to Neowin?

My latest bat and cmd files are at the top of page 20 on that thread. You can bring them over if you like.

EDIT: I assumed you were posting the latest of these files. I sure hope so anyway, because the earlier ones you'd have to consider Beta versions. The final ones are final versions.

You know what, if you do bring them over, it might be a good idea to bring my instructions and warnings that go along with them, too.

Yes,they are the finals,I just noticed all sorts of other, earlier files when I read it again, those were listed as "missing" before when I'd tried to download them originally.Perhaps Neowin re-instated them.

Bold_Fortune,this is your work. You should present it how YOU want it to be presented.I started the thread, with only links and a brief pre-amble.I'm more than happy to remove everything I've written, and you can start afresh,if you'd like to.It'd be fantastic to have the realdeal, not a pale imitation.

How's it looking now?

I don't know how current this list of I.E. dlls is.DO NOT TRY THIS-at least until I am able to testify that nothing gets knackered.I removed O.E. And I.E via Add/Remove programmes initially.Note:This is not an option that would appeal to everyone, since people rely on the convenience of being able to scan for updates at Windows Updates site.

From the Early Works Of Bold_Fortune

"There are 56 system32 files XP installs for Explorer. These are the same files XPLite will delete should you purchase the program. You can save yourself some money by removing them yourself.

Should you change your mind and decide you want Explorer back:

To Reinstall IE6:

1) Insert the Win XP CD

2) Open Start / Run and type:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 cwindows\inf\ie.inf

Press ENTER

This little thing here:

http://www.programmersheaven.com/zone16/.../30729.htm

will put in your right-click context menu an option to unregister dlls when you right-click over a dll file. Simply highlight all of the files listed below, right-click on one of the dlls and select unregister dll.

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ON RC2.TEN KINDS OF WEIRDNESS OCCURS WHEN YOU REMOVE THE DLLs LISTED.

Now here's the list of system32 files:

Is that a trick question?

mmc.exe > Microsoft Management Console

mmcbase.dll > MMC Base DLL

mmcndmgr.dll > MMC Node Manager DLL

mmcshext.dll > MMC Shell Extension DLL

My guess it's one or all of these above.

Boldie;

Gotta take a few exceptions to your list. My suggestions are pulled from your list, and shown in the same order as encountered in your original message. Hope this helps to locate them in your original list.

At the end, I've added a few more possibilities for folks to consider. Plus, I've expressed some thoughts on backup files. Please render your opinion on my opinions. Thanks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Begin suggested corrections

chklist.* /Lost Cluster Files

/* Neither CHKDSK nor SCANDISK generate this filename convention. What program generates this, please? (Just curious.) */

*.chk / Lost Cluster Log Files

/* These are not log files, they are the actual content found in a sector that was not properly reserved in the FAT. You might be able to recover data that would otherwise be lost. If you need something desparately, don't knock these out before at least glancing at them.*/

*.dmp / Potential junk

/* Not always junk. These files are usually printer or memory dumps. In the case of the former, they may be stored print jobs awaiting the actual "print now" command. In the case of the latter, they might allow one to find a block of text that was erroneously erased from memory. I sometimes find that an ascii conversion of some database or spreadsheet was given this extension. */

*.err / Error File

/* I saw one instance, years ago, where this extension was used by the author to hold the error strings for his program. That allowed him to customize the language. Clever, but not normal. Still, deserves a "Beware" warning, don't you think? */

*.ftg / Word List File of *.HLP
*.fts / Word List File of *.HLP
*.gid / Windows Help Index Files

/* I don't think I'd delete these three files. They do speed up the help process considerably. Yes, you can have them re-created at will, and sometimes it's automatic, but they don't harm anyone, and the benefits are significant. */

*__ofidx*.* / Microsoft Find Fast Indexer File

/* <span style='color:red'>DANGER WILL ROBINSON! DANGER!</span> Oops, major faux pas. The first asterisk will be taken to mean everything between it and the end of the filename (before the dot). Hence, the __ofidx* will be ignored, and every file will be blasted to smithereens. Delete *.* - bad! [left arm swing] (Think "Napster - bad!") */

*install*.txt / Potential junk
*order*.txt / Potential junk
*readme*.txt / Potential junk
*whatsnew*.txt / Potential junk

/* Same as above, but limited to all text files, not all files period. Besides, Readme.* files are potentially helpful. They don't take up scads of disk space, so do you really need to show them the door? */

pspbrwse.jbf / Paint Shop Folder Image Information Cache File

/* If you use Paint Shop Pro, you definitely don't wanna delete this little jewel. It isn't a cache file at all; it's sort of a "quick view" collection of each directory (where generated by user demand), and is used by the proggie's Browser command ("Ctrl-B"). Call it a "poor man's catalog", ala the expensive software that does no better a job, and takes up much more disk space.

I use it to quickly find images I've misplaced. It's also handy when comparing similar images (padded shots) - you don't have to open each and every one of them, they're already side-by-side. This is truly a keeper. In fact, I even made this into a recognized file type - clicking it opens PSP directly. (Not normally done at installation, but easy to do.) */

UNDO*.Reg / Registration Backup (REGCLEAN.EXE)

/* Uhh, aren't you advocating the removal of a potential lifesaver here? It's sorta like a "restore point", to which you might return if something goes bump in the night. Personally, I'd go easy on this one. */

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Begin filling in of extension meanings

*.000 / sequential file in split Zip archive?
*.001 / ditto
*.002 / ditto
*.b~k / Backup file, some text editors
*.bk / obviously a backup file, but I don't know where from
*.doc / Don't tell me you don't recognize this one [lol]
*.edb / Exchange Server store (a database)
*.err / you did do something with this up above, or am I badly mistaken?

Oh, to hell with it - look 'em up yourownself. Go over to:
filext.com (no www)
http://www.file-ext.com/
http://www.stack.com/file/extension/
http://www.ace.net.nz/tech/TechFileFormat.html
http://whatis.techtarget.com/fileFormatA/0...33,sid9,00.html
http://www.uni-koeln.de/themen/Graphik/Ima...ng/fileext.html

You get the idea. Every one of these lists overlaps a little, no one site has absolutely every extension ever made. But between them, you outta be able to take care of business quite handily.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Begin suggested additions

*.mbk / dBase IV index backup file
*.AC$ / generic extension for an Autocad backup file
mso*.* / anything to do with MS Office, all are temp files
med-*.* / MED text editor temp files (the world's best text/programmer's editor, bar none)
www*.tmp / temporary Internet shortcut/link (really!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Begin blathering

And now for the moment you've all been waiting for.... (drum roll, please)....

I don't know about you, but I sometimes find stuff in backup files that I would otherwise never be able to recover. This isn't so often due to stupid mistakes on my part, as it is in that I've made edits, and I suddenly realize that the 2 pages of prose that I so callously deleted a few minutes ago would now fit perfectly. Why do a series of Control-Z's (which would wipe out my more recent edits), when I can simply open my most recent backup, and deftly pluck out the desired block of text for insertion into the current document?

Backups are your friends. At least, they can be, if you let 'em.

Bdip, bdip, bdip, bdip.... That's all, Folks!

Oddysey

I'm no longer in the rat race - the rats won't have me!

I pretty much ended my file deleting project some time ago. (Just when I thought I was out, Jaded_Goth pulls me back in. lol. Oh, BTW, I sort of look like Al Pacino...only maybe a little more handsome.)

But I kind of thought this was an important thing regarding my bat and cmd files...

The .cmd and system32.bat files I created that some of you may have download thanks to Jaded_Goth posting them, will move and save the folders and their files to a backup folder on C:\ . The backup folder is simply named, Backup.

Within the Backup folder you'll notice what I call "Smart Placement" of subfolders, identical to how they look in XP. For example, you will see a folder named Program Files. Within Program Files you will see Common Files. Within Common Files you will see Microsoft Shared. Within Microsoft Shared you will see Speech. Within Speech you will see all the files the Speech folder contains.

I did this "Smart Placement" of folders and their files for you, so you would always know exactly where they came from should you decide to replace some, or all, of them to their original locations.

Tell you what I will do, Jaded_Goth. I can every-so-often post some of the individul files I remove that I never got around to making into scripts.

Here's the FONTS I remove by my system...

(Oh, btw, Oddysey, I never "advocate" anyone doing what I do with files. I only post what works for my system setup. At best, others can only...and MUST...consider it but a guideline as to the possibilities of what can be removed from XP.)

Here's the FONTS I remove by my system...

C:\WINDOWS\Fonts
Sometimes .fon extention fonts (The red A fonts) hide, so you need to run a search for *.fon in Search Assistant. You can safely delete all of the .fon fonts except these 15:

cga40woa.fon
cga80woa.fon
coure.fon
dosapp.fon
ega40woa.fon
ega80woa.fon
modern.fon
roman.fon
serife.fon
smalle.fon
sserife.fon
symbole.fon
vgafix.fon
vgaoem.fon
vgasys.fon

EXTRA FONTS (TTF Extentions) I delete:

arial black - (aka ariblk)
Book Antiqua (All)
Bookman Old Style (All)
Century Gothic (All)
comic sans MS - (aka comic)
comic sans MS bold - (aka comicbd)
cour.ttf

Palatino Linotype (all)

symbol
Trebuchet MS (all)
timesbi.ttf
timesi.ttf
tunga

Here is a list of all the remaining Fonts I have in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. To see them all, because some are hidden, you need to do a search with your Search Assistant for *.fon, *.ttf

arial.ttf
arialbd.ttf
arialbi.ttf
