Google ads why?
Why am I suddenly seeing ads on Google searches? I've used Scroogle almost exclusively for many years but I have used Google occasionally and not seen ads as Proxo filtered them. I realize Google has become a great deal more evil recently, but I don't understand why Proxo doesn't filter the ads.

RE: Google ads why?
have you tried my "Tight Light Blue Theme"?
i'm getting no ads...

are your ads dependent on what browser you are using?
in the sense of do you get them with this browser, but not with that browser?

on another note, truly sad that Scroogle is no more, i just noticed that also a few days ago... Sad

RE: Google ads why?
I'm in a hurry right now but a quick inquiry. Are you all using Proxo SSL so Google searches are SSL? If so, that might be the explanation. I have never used Proxo SSL. The ads are based on my IP address and what I am searching for and have searched for in the past so Google is tracking me since the Google privacy changes. Not third party ads...Google ads and I think I get them due to the recent privacy changes in Google. Google even directs me to read their privacy changes. I don't want to jump to conclusions though since I haven't used straight Google searches much until Scroogle was taken down. I'll have to look at my Proxo settings again also...maybe something got unchecked, etc.

I'll try the suggestions here later and post later.

RE: Google ads why?
Since late 2011, enabled Proxo SSLeay/OpenSSL via config button. (Usually use firefox. I allow some permanent cert overrides in cert_override.txt in profile folder. But after days or a week, this file gets corrupted, so i delete or rename, and Firefox generates a new one. Also, the line for each domain is the same in different cert_override.txt).

Haven't tried half-SSL.
I like SSL filtering, because SSL and non-SSL websites need help.

Google ads
Does your ad problem change with js enabled vs disabled?

i see almost the same page for combinations of all
js on or off
https or https
http://www.google. or encrypted.google.

I use this method to "permanently" disable js in firefox prefs.js
Code:
user_pref("capability.policy.nojs.javascript.enabled", "noAccess");
user_pref("capability.policy.nojs.sites", "http://books.google.com http://images.google.com https://books.google.com https://images.google.com");

Test by trying a bookmarklet. Bookmarklets in firefox don't work if js disabled. (NoScript has setting that always allows bookmarklets. Opera (8, 9, and iirc 10) always allows bookmarklets on js disabled pages)
Google tries loading many tracking parameters, in many locations, including href, ajax/json/??, inputs, and meta refresh. There's a lot of pesky interaction, but for a while google search pages would meta refresh reload with &gbv= and &ei= tracking when js disabled. IIRC, a proxo filter killed the meta refresh, so for now i have even cleaner google urls Smile!

RE: Google ads why?
With latest 2011-12-22rc1 config and the filters indicated in my previous post, there are positively NO ads on google page either http://www.google.com or encrypted.coogle.com. (Header Mode = 1.4 Advanced)

No matter wether or not Js or Java are enabled, either block or not 3d-party scripts.

RE: Google ads why?
Sorry, I haven't been back here sooner. After Scroogle was taken down, I was really depressed. I finally started using StartPage because it doesn't record your IP or save the searches. But after several weeks of using it, it is not very good. It does give me 100 results per page. I also tried duckduckgo which is really bad search results but is privacy oriented. The best search results are Bing and Google. How come Proxo doesn't filter Bing? I'd use it if Proxo filtered it. It is just as good, I think, as Google for results.

Anyhow, it looks like I have to use Google if I want good search results (how I miss Scroogle)! Here's what is going on with Google now and ads and the missing 100 results per page.

Sidki 2010:

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 22;27;23001.png (Size: 17.88 KB / Downloads: 753)

I get ONLY 10 results per page. I get ads at the top and the bottom. Ad are LOCALIZED! Google is using my IP address which it has pinpointed to my hometown. Even my ISP doesn't do this! My ISP has all IP addresses for the entire state put in a town on another island and most sites think that I am in that town, on another island, but Google has found my actual town and localizes the ads when I use Sidki 2010 filters so that it shows me a map and an ad for a LOCAL store here selling "hard drives" that I searched for. I DO NOT WANT ANY OF THIS!

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 22;29;07001sidki 2010.png (Size: 79.46 KB / Downloads: 774)

Proxo disabled:

Same as Sidki 2010. Except that I have JJoe's filter on Sidki 2010 to color the Google bar at the top something other than black and I have Ozo's filter that hides the left side column on Google search results. Other than those two things, search with Prox DISABLED is exactly the same as with Proxo enabled with Sidki 2010 filters.

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 22;30;27001proxo bypassed.png (Size: 82.21 KB / Downloads: 743)

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 22;31;15001proxobypassed.png (Size: 21.85 KB / Downloads: 722)

Sidki Feb 2009:

Ads at the top but NO ads at the bottom! I see the left side column junk and can't hide it. Google shows my home town and the ads at the top are localized.

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 22;34;16001sidki feb20009.png (Size: 77.89 KB / Downloads: 696)

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 22;35;06001sidkifeb2009.png (Size: 21.65 KB / Downloads: 718)

I see 100 results per page! This really puzzles me. How come I get 100 results per page with this old Sidki set and only 10 with his latest set?

Google says that if I want to CHANGE the localization that I MUST allow cookies. I thought Proxo was giving it a cookie. I don't want to sign up for a Google account and I will NOT do so as that is the kiss of death for one's privacy. But I want my localization to be "USA" (much BROADER in other words) NOT my hometown!

Plus, I want Proxo to filter out the ads at the top and the bottom. Sidki 2010 is not filtering ads at all. I might as well not be using Proxo at Google search.

It would be nice if Proxo also filtered out all the irrelevant junk on the page like RELATED SEARCHES FOR "HARD DRIVE" at the top with the categories "Stores" and "Brands".

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 23;38;34001sidki2010.png (Size: 7.9 KB / Downloads: 744)

I would also like Proxo to filter out the junk at the bottom of the page: Searches Related to Hard Drives and then Google lists a bunch of KEYWORDS.

.png  Saturday, March 10, 2012 23;39;22001.png (Size: 24.81 KB / Downloads: 766)

What I want is a CLEAN search results page like I got with Scroogle and like I used to get with Proxo. I realize Google has made a lot of changes since I last saw clean Google search results pages and I have been using Scroogle for at least two years so I have been oblivious to some of the Google changes until now that I can't use Scroogle, but surely there is way to have Proxo filter better and give me 100 results per page like Sidki 2009 still does.

The screenshots are from Fx 4.01. I see the same behavior on Fx 10 Enterprise on a virtual machine.

BTW, Ozo's filter to toggle the left side column on search results is NOT working on SeaMonkey 2.6.1. I don't see the column but there is NO toggle switch if I do want to see it. (I don't have the very latest SM because I am waiting on an extension to be compatible but I will install version 2.8 as soon as it is released as it fixes a long standing bug that is very irritating and possibly Ozo's filter will work then).

RE: Google ads why?
I installed your config set on a virtual machine that runs XP Pro same my as my host machine. I have Fx 10 Enterprise installed on the virtual machine. I did a Google search from the Fx search bar and I get a difficult to read display for the search results that is sprawled way across the page.

.png  Monday, March 12, 2012 16;26;21001sidki2011.png (Size: 106.98 KB / Downloads: 770)

I then did the same search using Sidki's 2010 config. The display is far more pleasing to the eye and much easier to read as there is no sprawling. For the result "How does Dell EPP (Member Purchase) work" see the sublinks listed that are not shown with your config.

.png  Monday, March 12, 2012 17;05;17001sidki2010fx10.png (Size: 96.31 KB / Downloads: 739)

I haven't yet installed your config on my host machine that runs Fx 4.01 so I don't know if that version of Fx would display search results differently from Fx10 or not when using your config.

I don't have thumbnails for each search result when using Sidki 2010 (which is how I want it), but I see that I can open thumbnails with your config. Could that difference be the reason for the sprawled display with your config?

I also did the "hard drive" search again with your config and you are right I do NOT see any ads. Smile! But I would rather see ads than have the sprawled display I get with your config. Plus, on a search for "hard drives", using your config, I get a lot of junk results for "news" and "videos". I don't get any of that irrelevant stuff (I didn't tell Google to give me results for News, Videos or Images) with Sidki's 2010 search. A CLEAN Google search should be identical to what I got from Scroogle. When I used Scroogle, if I, for some reason, wanted videos (which I would never want), or News (which is not likely), or Images, (also very unlikely), I went directly to google.com and did a specific search ONLY for News or ONLY for videos or ONLY for images by clicking on the appropriate links.

This clutter that I am getting in your config is worse than seeing ads with Sidki's older configs. Sad But I object to both. Proxo should give me a CLEAN SEARCH AND NOTHING ELSE. If I don't want to bother to go directly to google.com to do a News, Image, or Video search then I know how to type those search terms in to Fx search bar for a Google search. I do NOT want any of this unless I specifically ask for it!

I think you haven't been keeping up. Wink

My working google filters have always had a "full width" display for google searches. I don't remember if these sets had an option to disable it or not but it might be easy enough to add. You might be able to remove the feature.

Removing unwanted "containers" like the "productbox" might be as easy as finding the names, "id=", of the containers and adding an entry to Exceptions-U like

Code:
www.google.com/search  $SET(sAdKey=productbox.newsbox.videobox.head.)

Yes, I am referring to search results spanning the entire width of the browser window. I have been using Proxo since the latter part of 2001. I have NEVER seen a sprawling display for Google search results until JJoe's filters. I've used original Proxo filters, JD5000, Sidki. None of those sprawl the results.

I'm not sure why you think it is easier to read sprawled out but I sure don't find it easier. What do you mean by "telephone display" search? I don't know what that is. I rarely need to look up a phone number but if I do I have plenty of REAL PAPER phone books. I use one of them. I can't recall the last time I needed a phone number outside of Hawaii except an 800 number and I get that off the business's website.

HTH

If you mean not "keeping up" with Google changes that is true. I used Scroogle for several years and only used Google if I needed to do a special type search like for Images or News. I also used Google when Scroogle was down or being blocked but until recently that didn't happen often so, yeah, I didn't know what Google was doing with search. But before I started using Scroogle, I used Google by going to google.com directly and searching. When I did this, I never got sprawled out results. I always uncheck the blue stuff that Sidki had for Google display (I would like green but not blue which is extremely difficult to read for me) but otherwise I have kept all the Google filters intact and I never got sprawled results.

I have a related question. I can't remember how to chain another proxy to Proxo. Can someone tell me? I installed Abine's ProtectedSearch today on Fx10 on a virtual machine. I really like it! Google can't spy nor can Abine. But I get a lot of ads on the results pages and only 10 results per page. I have never used HTTPS with Proxo but if I install the needed files for it I was hoping I could chain ProtectedSearch to Proxo so it filters through both proxies. I recall that the only time I chained another proxy to Proxo was not long after I began using Proxo and I had trouble getting it to work and what Scott said in Proxo help about chaining just confused me. I did finally get it to work (it was for beta testing the new Cookie Crusher that used a proxy) but I never chained anything again after that testing.

I have also been told that if I install NoScript on Fx then Google will not be able to use location techniques to locate my town. So, that is another alternative to ProtectedSearch. I had NoScript for awhile several years ago and didn't stick with it with long enough, I think, to get to like it. Plus, I am told that certain Hosts file lists protect privacy better than proxo now too. You say I am behind which is likely true but, I am getting the impression Proxo is lagging in privacy protection. If I bypass Proxo at Panopticlik on Fx 10, the results show me lost in the crowd. But with this latest filter set, I am worse off than with Sidki's earlier sets. I am even more UNIQUE (if that is possible). I think that is awful and to me, Proxo, should make me "lost in the crowd" not make me unique so I am a sitting duck for tracking! Panopticlick cannot tell that I have Flash, etc enabled for Fx10 IF I BYPASS Proxo, but with Proxo and this latest filter set, it sees every plugin and also says Supercookies are being set! With Proxo bypassed, Panopticlik says javascript is disabled for supercookies. Maybe I can adjust some filters on Proxo to improve fingerprinting score but I'm not sure what I need to adjust (and there is that damning browser string that makes me totally unique. Proxo should not set that unique string). At least, at first glance, it appears that Proxo fights with Fx10 as far as the privacy changes in Fx10. I didn't notice this on Fx4 that I still use on my host machine because none of the privacy changes are on that version.

I don't think this set has changed that much.

Not to be combative but I often wonder if people understand the way things work. Passing some tests at panopticlick doesn't mean you are hid.

For instance, to disable some "supercookies" I set "dom.storage.enabled" to false in Firefox's "about:config" a long time ago. However, I understand that this makes me more unique. I know that panopticlick says that 1 in 8.59 browsers have this setting but I will bet that most people don't know about "about:config" let alone "dom.storage" or even "panopticlick". Same for blocking plug-in discovery. Most people simply do not do the things that I/we do.

You could change the user-agent in User-Agents.ptxt but there are many other things that can be used to identify you. All set users share this setting but there may be only one in Hawaii.

I think what is needed is an approach that allows us to enjoy using our computers.

Assuming that websites have our IP addresses and that most of us only have a couple of computers working at once,
we would like to keep sites from collecting and sharing valid information about where we came from, where we are going, and what we did. Except! when it is to our advantage to do otherwise.

Consider, there is a site that uses files from Google. By checking the headers, I know that all Google knows is that somebody at my IP address may have (I cache hard) downloaded some files. I could block the unnecessary files with the Proxomitron, Ghostery (I guess), maybe Hosts, etc but why bother? Google already knows that we use Google. BTW I think, one of these files is rendered inert by Sidki's filters.

We need to watch for problems and share findings.

To do much more will require something like Tor, disabling plug-ins, etc.

Edited for spelling panopticlick
