CNET recommends PC- cillin over NAV

ProxRocks Wrote:However, my "point" was that NOBODY can tell me with any shred of accountability exactly what percentage of recources NAV was utilizing on their 1992 computer and THEN compare that very percentage to a competing antivirus product in relation to its percentage of resources on a 2004 computer...
Okay, maybe an IT-guy with 20+ years of experience...

But I still stand firm on the premise that a 20-year-old app using 25% of total 20-year-old top-of-the-line RAM has no correlation whatsoever to a 2-year-old app using the same 25% of total 2-year-old top-of-the-line RAM...

Which in fact was my grievance, foregoing my "shaken" manner in presenting that perspective...

ProxRocks;

I never doubted the rest of your initial diatribe - in fact, I tend to agree with you wholeheartedly. But between you and mozerd, you have have just about as much EE experience as I did when I retired. And I'm here to tell you fine young fellows, one's memory can play some mighty intricate tricks on one's future recall of past events. [lol]

I am 61 years young -- amd hopefully next November I will turn 60 years old and if I survive that the following year just perhaps I'll turn 59 etc. etc. etc.

When I quoted those numbers I actually went to my notes on the subject --- back then I was part of the evaluation team that spent too much time doing eval stuff because the "senior" guys wanted to make a business case and needed what they termed as facts -- for some reason that I cannot for a month of Sundays remember why. [beatdown]

Now I have ZERO idea how YOUNG you are -- but if you do have a memory its got to be far FAR far better than mine cause that's the way it is. B)

Why do I smell a reverse pissing contest in the making? :o [lol]

You're one up on me, but I've got a birfday comin' up RSN, so don't dawdle. :P

And I took notes too, so I know that if you're half as anal as I am, you probably kept them long after you left that work place. The wife made me spit them back out when we moved into our retirement home. I consider myself lucky I was able to keep the 4,000+ science fiction books that I have collected over the years, in anticipation of reading them during retirement.

Life has a strange habit of getting in your way when you are making other plans. [rolleyes]

That was before there were National Parks, hence, no harm, no foul. Big Teeth

ProxRocks;

You sure know how to spoil a guy's retirement, don't you? <j/k> One of the best series ever, IMHO.

And for the record, I'm no speed demon reader - which is good, because I've got to make these things last. Have you seen the price of a new pocket book these days? YIKES! [angry]

hmm... lotta firewall/AV debates over here (before u all got naked and started bathing in front of the li'l kiddie animals in their parks where they were probably playin')

U wanna know what i feel about resource usage?
I feel that it's important what AV/firewall works according to your preferences... I mean I used to have Norton (loved it up until 2000)... then the bloats started, and detection rates went down (on my PC, infections came despite NAV being there)... removed NAV2004 (came as a bundle with some hardware)
recently, 3 ppl in my neighbourhood got NAV2005... two had instant troubles (removed it subsquently), while the third (running 128MB ram, P4 1.8GHz winXP) LOVES it and banned me from his house for not telling him it worked so well (and I'd told him McAfee 2005 was better)
so, i guess its important what the other peeps tell ya, but ya gotta listen to your PC you know. (again going off topic, I dont use JAVA proper on Firefox, as it crashes the poor flamin' fox down to the ground, while NO other person in the area has any such problem... hence, I listen to my PC and don't use Java on forefox. Big Teeth )
PS: 2005 versions: PC-Cillin has been rated better than Norton in at least 5 websites, Mcafee in 2 and 2 for Norton.
PPS: you guys know a good forum for Tiny Firewall? I'm about to install it 'coz I stopped havin' fun with Kerio.

well, the tiny forum on the site is... well, meh...
Thought there should be something better (Tiny isn't even talked about on DSLR, only Kerio)
used to have Kerio2, now Kerio4, about to throw it away 'coz it don't have component control, and privacy feature doesn't work as well as you'd think it would, and it can't stop PCAudit2, thermite and copycat (I still love it, and 4.1.2 is amazingly nice and light)
Edit: this is post no13 from no13. Enjoy.

There are not many forums for Tiny (even the Kerio/Tiny forum will refer you to the Tiny forum) because of the complex nature of the program. It has a very steep learning curve and a rather complex GUI. TF6 easily stops PCAudit2, thermite and copycat and any other exploit tried against it. It takes quite a while to get used to and set up TF6 but you will be rewarded with the most secure setup available today. It gives a sense of security unmatched by any other security app imho. Virii, worms, trojans etc. don't stand a chance against it. There is a new GUI in the works and because of the complex nature of the program it is always evolving.

Kerio 4.x is known to be buggy and is not well received by the Kerio/Tiny forum and most there will not use it. Hopefully they will continue to develop it and it can someday be a reliable program.

Hi "Guyz",
I really like the "Out-Post" fire-wall much better than any of the others that I've tried. "Click Here"The only thing that You might want to remember is that the "Free" version will automatically "Check for Updates. I always untick that before I hook up on line. It's under the "Help" tab on the main dialog box.

Have a Great and Wonderful Day,
"Jak" Smile!
