DNS Caching

Hi "Garcot",

Glad to hear that everything is working fine for You. Sorry that the Fast cache program didn't work so well for You.

I use PRoxo's ad-list, hosts file, and fire wall to block unwanted sites.
*Proxo provides blocking & filtering for Your browser, but nothing else.
*But a hosts file will stop "any" program on Your machine from contacting unwanted and untrusted sites.
*However, the hosts file will not block sites if You are using a remote proxy to surf through, so I use the site blocking feature in My firewall to block unwanted sites also. I guess it's what I feel comfortable with. Smile!

That was a good idea to set Your Dns server settings to local machine. Thankz for sharing the info. Smile!

Hi JakBeNymble,

How about setting the Proxo Listening Port to 53 ? I tried on a experimental basis and the IE 6 zoomed! May be it has something to do with no of open connections....

Can you please confirm?

Thanks
Garcot

Hi "Garcot",
I'll check and see if I notice any speed increase. But remember I'm on dial-up right now, so someone else with broadband might check to see if they notice any speed increase by changing Proxo's listening port to port 53 (DOMAIN). Right off hand I can't see why that changing the listening port would speed things up, but I'm always will to try something new out to see if it helps. Smile!

Be back later with results, have a Great & Wonderful Day My Good Friend,

Hi JAK,

I noticed no of Time_wait connections after about 50sec reduces by almost 80% when setting the listening port to 53. This I found was the reason for faster speeds. I should also mention I have set
No of ConnectionsPer1_0Server to 40.

Thanks
Garcot

Yikes! A violation of the 'scientific method'...

If you change two variables at the same time, how do you know which variable has direct correlation to the resulting outcome?

garcot;

Why do I get the feeling that I'm standing out here in left field, sucking on the hindmost teat? Sad

In my version of Proxo, I can set the proxy port to only one thing at a time. I have to assume that your version of Proxo has the same limitation. Therefore, if you set Proxo to Port 53, then don't you also set your browser to the same port? So now you've not only modified to variables at the same time (ConnectionsPer1_0Server and the port), you've also overloaded the browser to handle both DNS and HTTP services.

There's something rotten in the state of Denmark, and my nose can't take the smell. :o Please advise us on how your system is setup, and how well it's handling everything.

Please also advise, is the DNS server located nearest to you halfway around the planet? Why in the name of the Good Lord Harry are you so sweaty about saving 50 to 100 thousandths of a second, per request???? Unless you are spidering the entire Internet (See the [Image: wayback_logo-sm.gif]), then I can't understand your fascination with this project. Have you any enlightenment for us dweebs? Please?? :P

It is not a question of few msec. It saves me a few seconds. Yes, my ISP is located within 3km radius.

I suggest you read the all the posts under this thread. That would give you an indication about the settings.

Else

Here it is
Primary DNS is set to 127.0.0.1 and secondary DNS servers are my ISP's DNS server IPs.

Firewall is Used : Zonealarm Pro, Proxo is allowed to fuction as a Server within the Trusted zone where in the ISP's DNS servers are included and expert rules are set to allow Proxo complete access to the ISP's DNS servers. Hosts does contain only IP of frequently visited sites.

access settings for Proxo : allow connection to this machine only

GHP enabled.

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, No of connections Persisting reduces by almost 80% which is what speed up the browsing.
I use ActivePorts to monitor and you can use Sniphere for monitoring all the connections made your machine and your local Network.
