when it "misses", the very first line of browser-viewed source code is "<html>" (whereas when it "hits" and the styling is applied, the very first line is "<!doctype html><html>")...

When it misses, do you see "/* Proxomitron light blue Google theme */" in the browser-viewed source code?

page's address does not contain a "#"...

Basically, the ajax page's address would look like "http://www.google.com/#num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=proxomitron". Some scripts then take the info after the "#" and create the page. Google Suggest uses ajax, I think.
