I don't encounter the issues that you describe running Firefox + Linux. FF runs fast with no memory problems in my distro. And beyond setting offered preferences, I can hack the code of any extension I choose, to reflect my individual preference. I can't speak for Windows related effects since I haven't run an MS OS in quite a while. My Linux OS with Firefox + extensions, and Proxo, and other stuff, etc. normally runs in less than 130M.

Proxo runs faster with less overhead on Linux than on Windows because, in part, I've eliminated duplication of effort between it and some of those extensions that you hate. Trims down Proxo quite a bit. And naturally I don't need to run the other extraneous 'protection software ' options required by an MS OS.

But, like you said, to each his own.

I'm running latest FF3. I also hate the Awesome Bar and so I easily changed it to operate in a more traditional way, like in the obsolete FF2 series. Perfect.
