I tried to run windows update on one of my WinXP VMs and IE8 continually crashed and died trying to update the update software.

I opened FireFox (FF), added [IE Tabs] addon and ran windows update using FF. It happily updated the update software, but sort of hung on looking for updates, so I ended FF.

I then opened up IE8 and tried again. Because FF had updated the update software, IE8 didn't try to, nor did it crash. It found my updates and I got the job done.

Moral: Synergy Rulez!
