- Oddysey - Jul. 02, 2005 03:49 AM Kye-U; I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but ever since the changeover ot dhost/kyeu/yaddayadda, I've been forced to log in whenver I visit the forums. To be clear, if I've exited all the way out of every browser session, then the cookie more-or-less expires. If I keep at least one browser session open, then I can come and go as I please. This happens even if I take Proxo entirely out of the loop, let alone just disable it. Got any ideas about why that is? Oddysey - Kye-U - Jul. 02, 2005 05:19 AM Perhaps it's time for a reinstall of the forums? There must be some bad settings from the 3 moves we've done so far [lol] Maybe switch to phpBB? Since Invision is not being developed anymore, and you have to pay for a license for v2.x, phpBB seems to be the only free solution left... And of course I've been reading on the holes in the coding... So should we keep this forum or migrate to phpBB?
- Siamesecat - Jul. 02, 2005 06:33 AM I have not had any such problem. I did update my AllowCookie list, however. - Kye-U - Jul. 02, 2005 06:48 AM That could be the problem Oddysey ![]() BTW, I've installed phpBB on my computer, and created a backup of Invision's MySQL database, and used the Invision to phpBB convertor. It worked rather well, but I noticed some members were missing and the categories were not in order. I doubt I will use the convertor (if we decide to switch). I will just make this forum read-only [lol] - Oddysey - Jul. 02, 2005 03:47 PM Kye-U; I kinda think that switching forum software would be overkill, at least for my problem. [rolleyes] I can say that this lack-of-login-capability occurs only on this forum, and only since we switched to dhost. That implies that the problems lays either with the installation, or with dhost's ability to set/read cookies. For those not having this problem, you should realize that allowing cookies is not the problem/answer. I reiterate, I have taken Proxo out of the picture completely - it is not started, and the browser points to regular Port 80. I still get this must-login-again guff. Proxo is not part of the problem, nor can it be part of the answer. However, be all that as it may, I have to say that is seems reasonable to me to drop an unsupported product in favor of a supported one. phpBB has a large following on the 'net. In fact, now that I think about it, The UOPF is the only forum left that I visit regularly that still uses Invision. That's a clue, I should think. Oddysey p.s. Just thought of it..... I use no cookie managers at all, I let Proxo do all of that kinda stuff. And my browser hasn't been set to some obscure setting that forces cookies from dhost/Invision to be ignored. - Oddysey - Jul. 02, 2005 04:14 PM Kye-U; I've just noticed another strangeness about how the forum operates. I decided not to start another thread, I'm betting that they're all related. In days of old, starting in March of 2004 and continuing until the move to dhost, I observed a small idiosyncracy whenever I used the smilies. If I were to click on one from the list at the left, it would appear at the very end of whatever text was in the input field (where we type in our messages). I got used to that, and if I wanted to inject a smilie while editing, I just moved it manually from the end to where I wanted it. Fine, no biggie. But as of the switchover, I can inject any smilie into a body of text, and it will plop down right where my cursor is, not at the end! :o Now ordinarily I wouldn't complain about that, that's how it should have been all along. But I point this out only to give you further ammunition in trying to find where my problems are coming from. HTH. That is all. Oddysey - sidki3003 - Jul. 02, 2005 06:10 PM Hmmm... I'd be fine with switching board software, and sticking to supported and free software is a good argument, too. However, the problem is to sort'a loose all posts... Keeping a forum as read-only doesn't help much. There were at least four such Proxomitron forum switches over the past years, and it always was a major pain in the butt (replying to the same questions, posting the same filters, etc.). When ProxRocks was looking for a white-space killing filter, i knew hp wrote one, but i couldn't recall at all which of Arne's boards that was (he found it via Google). It makes things a lot easier, if you just have to look at a few places. Besides this board, we have two other vivid ones atm, CCSP and prox-list, both are searchable back to their beginning, a huge advantage. JMO, ![]() sidki - Kye-U - Jul. 02, 2005 06:43 PM Some screenshots of phpBB (after I ran the IPB to phpBB convertor. Note that I did use an old database. After all, it's just a test) ![]() A light one, with dark text and a light background for you fossils. ![]() ![]() A darker one (for those who prefer darker colours, like me )![]() ![]() I'm seriously considering of changing to phpBB I don't mind having to constantly patch it up.Scrap my idea for making this forum read-only (if we do make the switch). ![]() I will use the convertor to import all posts and members and private messages and categories into phpBB. Oddysey, I'm pretty sure this forum is getting old... Invision's Database Size: 11 MB phpBB's Database Size: 4.26 MB Hmmm.... ![]() BTW, if you want, take a look here and go through the styles and post which one(s) you like ![]() http://demo.phpbbstyles.com/ - Oddysey - Jul. 03, 2005 04:11 AM Kye-U; Quote:BTW, if you want, take a look here and go through the styles and post which one(s) you likeIris Expanded 1.7 kinda turned my crank. :o But they all do look quite alike, they're definitely "geezer approved". The old, and what I consider normal (though undesirable) behavior, has returned. If I click a smilie, it gets deposited in the input field at the end of any text. No more putting it where my cursor is sitting - curses! - Siamesecat - Jul. 04, 2005 06:26 AM I liked the dark background sample from the Imageshack page. - Kye-U - Jul. 04, 2005 03:16 PM Personally, I like that one too I'm waiting for more members to vote here: http://prxbx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=516
- Shea - Jul. 04, 2005 05:01 PM Oddysey, To go back to the original topic.....I've had that same problem on some other forums I visit. They were both running IPB 2 though. The first one, I would login fine and it would keep me logged in until they started having database troubles and I would have to sign in everytime. Then they had more database problems, but when it got fixed, I started loging in like I was suppose to. The other forum I still have to login everytime. The wierd part is that I am like the only user that is having the problem (just like you are). - Oddysey - Jul. 05, 2005 06:03 AM Shea; Thanks for that. Nice to know that I'm the 'token' database reject here on The UOPF! Oddysey |
