Hi Proxo-Friends,
I was checking My emails [Outlook express] and was watching in The PRoxo Log window as I clicked on each email, I noticed how many sites the e-mails were connecting to inorder to grab images for the email. So I decided that I would add all of those sites to my OutPost fire-wall's Block list.

I've attached the list , . . .I've tried to attach, . . below just in case You might want to download it and take a look. It could be use for hosts file and The PRoxo block list. But I decided to add them to My Firewall since the firewall should stop any app on my machine from contacting the sites. And also You might want to edit the list as You like.

Hmmmmmm, . . .can't seem to attach the file.
here's the list:

Code:
# list of sites that I have in My Outpost "Fire-Wall" Block list.

Surely it would be easier just to read email as plain text. Then no images would be loaded, and no code would be executed (and therefore no nasties installed).
Jak;

Your list looks nice, but it is rather sparse. <_< In point of fact, you can combine some of the sites, like these:

> store1.yimg.com
> store6.yimg.com
> us.i1.yimg.com

into the single url of yimg.com. Of course, if you're using the HOSTS file, then the separate url names have to be left intact.

Like you, I believe that a firewall actually does a better job of being more selective about what proggie gets to contact which websites, instead of the HOSTS file's rather totalitarian "all or nothin'" control. If your firewall can do the job with "partial" url's like yimg.com, then your process becomes much simpler.

And for the record, yimg stands for Yahoo IMaGes. If there's something allegedly legitimate there, then by definition, it's not legitimate. :o

Now, what I really want to know is, how do you get Proxo's log window to look at OE's traffic????? Could it be that you have configured OE to use Port 8080 and the localhost, just like your browser? And if so, then how is it that Proxo is using Ports 25 and 110, instead of 80, for connecting to the outside world? Please let us all know, as the suspence is killing me. (j/k)

You realize of course, that this would mean that Proxo could indeed filter one's email traffic. The only way I know of doing that right now is to view one's email via his/her browser, using a web based service such as YahooMail, HotMail, etc. I've been using Yahoo for mail for years, and Proxo cleans up 99.9% of all crap on the first go-round, so I'm extremely happy to use the web for my mail services.

BTW, Siamesecat is correct - selecting the option View as Plain Text will block the loading of any images that are included in HTML crap code. If an image is actually attached, then it will d/l to you, but those usually come only from your friends who want to share with you their latest *! [rolleyes] [smoke] Plus, if you have friends that insist on sending out messages using HTML crap code because "it's cute" or "it's cool", then you might wanna re-examine your friendship criteria. (another just kidding)

But do turn on View as Text, that will kill any advertising images, because absolutely no advertiser can conceive using anything other HTML (I don't need to use the strikethrough feature again, do I?) code. They're using templates, probably purchased from the same unspeakable little $^&*#@(!!%)^##@'s who are also writing the majority of viral infections that plague the 'net.

To be sure, the View as Text option only removes HTML code. No <img...> tags equals no images. Fine so far. But.....

If an image is attached directly to the message instead of being "referenced" (as in the <img.....> tag), it will still be d/l'd along with the text. As it was explained to me many years ago (too many years ago Sad ), an attached image isn't "referenced", it is actually encoded as part of the original message, right from the time of orignal authorship. In my experience, OE's option to View as Text does not strip out that encoding. Perhaps I could configure it to do so, I don't know, but I'm happy with the way things are running at the moment, TYVM Smile!

Hi "Guys",
I looked at My OutLook Settings, and in the connections "tab" there is a feature where OE uses the same internet connect settings as with InterNet Explorer. I suppose that how that PRoxo's Log window is picking the images traffic. I'll take a closer look this evening, I'm pressed for time this morning.
It would be better I suppose to change the settings in OE to View as Plain Text. But then I would have to learn how to read, instead of just looking at the pictures, . .hahahah, but of course now by blocking the images, I don't see the pictures anyway, so I might as well get my "hooked on phonics" back out and try it again! Big Teeth
You Guyz have a Great & Wonderful Day, see ya later,

I know, but I was assuming that Jak was concerned about web bugs and general advertising company or spammer snooping. I have yet to see a spam with an image as an attachment.

Good assumption. I can just imagine some joker trying to automate the process of attaching a webbug! [lol]

Although I gotta say, I'm surprised that the script kiddies haven't badgered the real hackers into making such a tool. I can think of at least two ways to do it right now, and that scares even me! :o [angry] No Expression :P Wink

Don't worry, I'm [smoke]
